Phillip Wakem, a character who becomes increasingly important as the novel comes to an end, stands in stark contrast to the character of Tom Tulliver. When Tom and Phillip become schoolmates at Kings Lorton with Mr. Stelling, Phillip is always depicted in a gentler light with finer features and more refined talents.
